Gardner Welcomes Hearing on Animas River Spill

Washington, DC – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) welcomed the announcement today that the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee will be holding a hearing, with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy as the witness, on the EPA’s spill of contaminated wastewater into the Animas River. The announcement follows a letter sent by Gardner and Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO), Tom Udall (D-NM), and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) requesting a hearing.

“I appreciate the Environment and Public Works Committee holding this oversight hearing,” Gardner said. “The EPA caused this spill, and their completely inadequate response has left Coloradans with more questions than answers. I’m continuing to closely monitor the situation in the Animas River and surrounding communities, and I look forward to hearing answers from the EPA.”
