Gardner Thanks Colorado Law Enforcement During Holiday Season

Washington – U.S. Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) sent a letter to Colorado law enforcement officers honoring the sacrifices they make to keep Colorado communities safe. In light of recent tragedies in Colorado Springs, Denver, and San Bernardino, California and the law enforcement’s active role in each of them, Gardner expressed the importance of recognizing the heroism that law enforcement officers display on a daily basis. Their commitment to protect and serve communities provides comfort to families across Colorado and the United States, and Gardner’s letter thanks them for their heroic sacrifice.

“Driven by courage and the desire to serve, you fulfill a great need throughout our communities. Carrying these values with you as you begin your watch each day when you leave your family to protect mine and so many others,” Gardner wrote. “Your badge identifies you as a source of help in vulnerable times, and behind each badge of police officers, sheriff deputies, correctional officers, and patrol men and women is a heart that extends beyond its own bounds.”

The letter reads, in full:

Dear Members of the Law Enforcement Community,

As we prepare our hearts and homes for the holiday season, I want to take a few moments to express my sincere gratitude for the service and protection you provide the citizens of our wonderful state. In the best of times, patrolling the roadways, being present in our neighborhoods, and maintaining order can be a difficult and dangerous duty.

I am proud of the work that the men and women who make up each law enforcement office carry out across the state. On watch in precincts, correctional facilities, and along our highways, you diligently fight to protect our state. Colorado families, including mine, from the Eastern Plains to the Western Slope, remain safe in large part because of each of you.

As the guardians of our communities, you prepare to respond to things that most of society simply hopes will not happen to them. Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman wrote that American law enforcement is the loyal and brave sheep dog, always standing watch for the wolf that lurks in the dark. With the recent events here at home and abroad, we are reminded of the threats that are hiding in the shadows and the dangers that police officers confront each and every day and yet, you remain steadfast in your commitment to stand up against evil.

I am personally grateful for the sacrifices you make and the commitment you demonstrate to protect our state. Your courage and selfless service was exemplified in the recent tragedy in Colorado Springs. As first responders, you are first to encounter the fear, the calls for help, and the danger, but in that fear and danger you provide hope and safety.

Driven by courage and the desire to serve, you fulfill a great need throughout our communities. Carrying these values with you as you begin your watch each day when you leave your family to protect mine and so many others. Your badge identifies you as a source of help in vulnerable times, and behind each badge of police officers, sheriff deputies, correctional officers, and patrol men and women is a heart that extends beyond its own bounds.

Calling Colorado home rings truer when you also have the honor to safeguard it. I am thankful for your service, and thankful to your families for their continued sacrifice as you dedicate yourself to the people of Colorado. Please know that you are constantly in my family's thoughts and prayers and we wish you each a safe holiday season!

Sincerely,

Cory Gardner
