Gardner Takes on Costly Regulations

Washington, D.C. – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) announced that he is co-sponsoring the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act, also known as the REINS Act. This act would restore significant power to the legislative branch with regard to rulemaking by requiring Congressional approval of all major rules and regulations proposed by the executive branch.

Major rules and regulations would be defined as those rules that will have greater than a $100 million impact on the economy, lead to a major increase in consumer prices, or negatively impact U.S. industry.

“The Founders intended for Congress to write the laws, and the executive branch to enforce them,” Gardner said. “Increasingly, however, the executive branch is writing major rules and regulations with huge economic consequences and no oversight by the elected representatives of the people. It’s time for that to change, and the REINS Act would make that happen.

“This was an issue I led on in the House of Representatives, and it was one of the tenets of my Four Corners Plan during my campaign for Senate. I’m excited to join Senator Paul and lead on this issue in the United States Senate.”
