Gardner Statement on Stephen Biegun’s Confirmation as Deputy Secretary of State

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy, issued the following statement today after the Senate voted 90-3 to confirm Stephen Biegun as the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of State. Mr. Biegun will continue to serve as the United States Special Representative for North Korea, the capacity in which he has worked closely with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to achieve the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea. 

“I am grateful for Mr. Biegun’s dedicated service to our country and his commitment to advancing American interests and values around the globe,” said Senator Gardner. “I look forward to working with him closely to address the global challenges that require American leadership, including deterring Kim Jong Un and other two-bit dictators; implementing the National Security Strategy to succeed in great power competition with China and Russia; and confronting terrorism worldwide to keep the American homeland safe.”
