Gardner Statement on Report that Russia is Behind Attacks on US Diplomats

Gardner- “Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism, and it is time we treat them that way.”

Washington, DC – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement in response to the NBC News report that Russia is likely the foreign actor responsible for the attacks against US personnel and diplomats in Cuba and China.

“If the NBC News reports are true, this is a direct attack by Russia against the United States,” said Senator Gardner. “As the facts of this heinous act are further ascertained, I urge the Senate to pass my legislation requiring the State Department to consider the designation of Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, as well as a comprehensive sanctions package against Russia I introduced last month with Senator Lindsey Graham.

“Vladimir Putin cannot continue to operate with impunity and it is time we impose tough and lasting consequences for Russia’s actions that undermine civilized norms and international law, including the invasion of Ukraine, the support for the murderous Assad regime in Syria, and assassinations on foreign soil. Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism, and it is time we treat them that way.”

Senator Gardner is the author of S. 2780, a bill to require a determination on designation of the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism and is a sponsor of Defending American Security from Kremlin Aggression Act of 2018, comprehensive legislation that will increase economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Russia.
