Gardner Statement on President Obama's Proposed AUMF

February 11th, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) released the following statement on President Obama’s proposed three-year authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) submitted to Congress today:

“The threat faced from ISIS is real, and requires a carefully coordinated strategy that ensures their complete destruction. I’m glad that the President has made the decision to seek this AUMF from Congress, and as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I look forward to carefully considering the President’s request.

“Coloradans and Americans deserve to have the Administration lay out a clear overall strategy to defeat ISIS. The President must provide the kind of leadership on this issue that only our Commander in Chief can, and make a clear, compelling case for his plan.

“Authorizing the use of military force is one of the most serious issues considered by Congress. I will carefully review the President’s plan, fully consider all the testimony heard in hearings, and weigh all the important factors involved in this AUMF. In the end, it is my hope that Congress can authorize a smart, directed, and comprehensive AUMF which will allow us to defeat ISIS once and for all.”
