Gardner Statement on Burma's Swearing in of Htin Kyaw
Washington, DC – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) today released the below statement after Htin Kyaw was sworn in as Burma's first civilian president in more than 50 years.
"I congratulate the Burmese people for taking a significant step toward a representative democracy today," said Gardner. "I urge the new civilian government to continue on the path of democratic reforms, including minority rights and fundamental freedoms of speech and assembly. I look forward to working with the Administration and my colleagues in Congress to ensure the United States remains a strong and vigilant partner as Burma's democratic path continues. "
