Gardner Statement on Ashraf Ghani Address to Congress

Washington, DC – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement regarding Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s address to a joint meeting of Congress:

“I’d like to thank President Ghani for his address today. Hearing the perspective of foreign leaders, especially our allies in a turbulent region, is vital to informing Congressional decision making and directing the course of our foreign policy. President Ghani is taking over leadership of his country at a critical crossroads, and his willingness to emphasize his close relationship with the United States hopefully bodes well for relations between our two countries.

“Americans have sacrificed much to build the country that President Ghani now leads. Our men and women in uniform, and the families who serve alongside them, have endured over a decade of struggle in the fight for Afghanistan. They gave their blood, sweat, and, in too many cases, their lives for the cause of freedom in a faraway country. I’m glad that President Ghani seems to recognize the immense sacrifices the American military and American taxpayer have made on his nation’s behalf.

“I’m hopeful that President Ghani’s election signifies progress in Afghanistan towards a more peaceful country and region. A strong, democratic Afghanistan can be a crucial partner in the struggle against radicalism in the Middle East, and the United States should do everything possible to encourage Afghanistan’s transformation into a modern, free state. Today’s address was a good step in that direction, and I hope many more will follow.”
