Gardner Statement on Animas River Spill

Washington, DC – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) released the following statement today on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) accidental release of contaminated mine water from the Gold King Mine into the Animas River:

“It is critical during the first hours of clean-up that the full attention of the EPA be focused on mitigation and stopping the flow of contaminants. I’ve spoken to EPA representatives and called on them to share with state, local, and tribal officials all information necessary to ensure the safety of the public, including the results of their testing and sampling.

“Many questions remain about the cause of the spill and the way information was released to impacted communities. I look forward to hearing the EPA’s answers as we work together to address this very serious situation. Coloradans deserve to know the EPA’s plan for cleaning up the mess they’ve made and their plan for the long term restoration of the river habitat impacted."
