Gardner Moves to Protect and Arm Military Recruiters

Washington, DC – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) announced today that he has signed on as a co-sponsor to the Securing Military Personnel Response Firearm Initiative (SEMPER FI) Act introduced by Senator Steve Daines (R-MT). The Act would allow the military to authorize recruiters to be armed while at recruitment centers and allows for improvements in the security of those centers. The carrying of a sidearm would be limited to officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs). The SEMPER FI Act has been endorsed by both the National Rifle Association and the Gun Owners of America.

“Our men and women in uniform are among the most highly trained and skilled users of firearms in the world,” Gardner said. “It’s time for the nonsensical prohibition on officers carrying sidearms at recruitment centers to come to an end. Such a ban does nothing to keep military recruiters safe, but instead disarms the very people best qualified to help avert a tragedy. The right to keep and bear arms is cherished and enjoyed by millions of Americans, and depriving our military officers of that same right is wrong and counterproductive. I’m pleased to co-sponsor this commonsense legislation, and look forward to working towards its passage."
