Gardner Congratulates General John E. Hyten on Confirmation as Vice Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff

Washington, D.C. – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) congratulated General John E. Hyten today after the U.S. Senate voted 75-22 to confirm him as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

 

“I’ve gotten to know General Hyten well from his time in Colorado Springs directing operations at Cheyenne Mountain, the 50th Space Wing at Schriever Air Force Base, and most recently as Commander of Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base,” said Senator Gardner. “I have the greatest confidence General Hyten will serve our nation well as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and I thank him and his family for their willingness to continue their service in this new role.”

 

As Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Hyten will be the nation’s second highest-ranking military officer. General Hyten is currently the Commander of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), one of eleven Unified Commands under the Department of Defense. USSTRATCOM is responsible for global command and control of our nation’s nuclear weapons and other strategic capabilities within the U.S. nuclear triad.

 

According to the Department of Defense, the general’s staff assignments include tours with the Air Force Secretariat, the Air Staff, the Joint Staff and the Commander’s Action Group at Headquarters Air Force Space Command as Director. General Hyten previously served as mission director in Cheyenne Mountain. General Hyten commanded the 595th Space Group and the 50th Space Wing at Schriever Air Force Base. Prior to assuming command of Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base, he served as the Vice Commander, Air Force Space Command.
