Gardner Applauds Senate Approval of Stilwell as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs

Urges Stilwell to Focus on Implementation of the Asia Reassurance Initiative Act

Washington, D.C. – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy, today applauded Senate confirmation of David Stilwell to serve as the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State. Stilwell is an Air Force veteran and retired in 2015 with the rank of Brigadier General. He was confirmed by a vote of 94-3.

“U.S. leadership is critical to ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific and a rules-based international order, and I’m pleased today the Senate approved the nomination of David Stilwell to serve as the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs,” said Sen. Gardner. “During Mr. Stilwell’s confirmation hearing earlier this year, he testified that as one of his top priorities, he will lead the implementation of my Asia Reassurance Initiative Act (ARIA) legislation—a generational framework for the Indo-Pacific region to ensure the United States remains the pre-eminent Pacific power for generations to come. I look forward to working with Mr. Stilwell in his new capacity and look forward to his testimony before the Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy on State Department’s ongoing ARIA implementation efforts.”
