Gardner Applauds $4.9 Billion to Support Nursing Homes and Protect Residents

Colorado skilled nursing facilities to receive more than $51.8 million

Washington, D.C. – Today U.S. Senator Cory Gardner applauded the announcement that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will be distributing $4.9 billion to skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) to respond to COVID-19, including $51,830,000 to Colorado. Gardner has called for additional, targeted support for nursing homes and other senior care providers to ensure they can combat COVID-19.

“Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19,”said Senator Gardner. “There have been over 500 COVID-19 fatalities in Colorado long-term care facilities, and that’s why I’m fighting for additional financial support, personal protective equipment, and testing to protect residents and workers in the facilities. This funding is welcome news and will help protect Colorado’s nursing home residents from this virus.”

This funding is provided by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which was signed into law on March 27, 2020. You can read more about Senator Gardner’s actions to protect Coloradans from COVID-19 here.

  • Gardner and the entire Colorado congressional delegation recently sent a letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requesting that personal protective equipment (PPE) deliveries to these facilities be continued through June and July and that FEMA expand which facilities receive these supplies to include assisted living facilities and intermediate care facilities.
  • In May 2020, Gardner called for funding to be set aside for nursing home and other senior care providers in the next tranche of CARES Act Provider Relief Funds.
  • In April 2020, Gardner, Governor Jared Polis, and Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) made a unified request to improve the CARES Act to better support Coloradans through COVID-19, including support for nursing homes.
  • In April 2020, Gardner and members of the Colorado delegation wrote to HHS requesting additional relief for nursing homes.
