Gardner Announces Staff Additions

Washington, D.C. – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) today announced two additions to his staff. Andy Merritt will replace Chuck Poplstein as Gardner’s State Director and begin on April 26, 2017. Casey Contres will serve as Gardner’s Press Secretary starting today.

Andy Merritt is a West Point graduate and served as an Armor Officer with assignments in the Republic of Korea and Fort Carson, Colorado. Previously, Merritt served the people of Colorado in various capacities. He spent two years as a district staffer with Senator Hank Brown and twelve years working for Senator Wayne Allard, serving as his State Director from 2001-2008. He has also served as Congressman Mike Coffman’s District Director for four years. Most recently, Merritt has been the Chief Defense Industry Officer for the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce. At the Colorado Springs Chamber, Merritt ran the Defense Development Division where he coordinated community support for the military installations and commands, supported the growth of related industry, and oversaw legislative affairs impacting those sectors.

“I’m thankful for Chuck Poplstein’s years of service to Colorado as my State Director and am thrilled Andy Merritt has agreed to take his place,” said Gardner. “Andy’s experience serving Coloradans will be a tremendous asset. I’m confident he will be a tireless advocate for the people of Colorado and I am looking forward to working with him to best serve my constituents.”

Casey Contres comes to Gardner’s office from Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Congressman Bill Shuster’s (PA-9) office. As Communications Director Contres oversaw Shuster’s personal office communications.

“I’m proud Casey Contres is joining our team today and will hit the ground running,” said Gardner. “Casey will be an integral part of my team and will make sure the people of Colorado know where I stand on a wide range of issues.”
