Gardner: Americans Deserve Truth About OPM Hack

Washington, DC – Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) released the following statement today following reports that the Obama Administration is declining to publicly condemn and appropriately punish the perpetrators and state sponsors of the massive data breaches of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM):

“From the beginning, the Obama Administration has not been honest with the American people about this hack,” Gardner said.“They repeatedly downplayed the number of Americans affected. They claimed that no one at OPM is responsible for millions of Americans having their data stolen. And while Administration officials have readily admitted to reporters on background that entities tied to the Chinese government are responsible for the breach, they refuse to do so directly to the American people. It is outrageous that we have not elevated this issue with the highest levels of the Chinese government, nor imposed any punitive measures on entities responsible.

“I sent a letter earlier this month to the President demanding answers to several outstanding questions about this hack. Thus far, I have received no answers. The American people deserve the truth about this massive failure of federal cybersecurity. They deserve to know what’s being done to hold those who perpetrated it responsible. And they deserve to know what’s being done to prevent it from happening again.”
